An honor killing is not related only to Islam. It is more of a culture or tribal custom. There is apparently nothing in the Islamic writings that would permit these acts of violence. Neverthless, it is spread wider that we even know of and those who did the gruesome procedure call upon Allah before committing the act.

Human Rights Watch definition:

Honor crimes are acts of violence, usually murder, committed by male family members against female family members, who are held to have brought dishonor upon the family. A woman can be targeted by (individuals within) her family for a variety of reasons, including: refusing to enter into an arranged marriage, being the victim of a sexual assault, seeking a divorce — even from an abusive husband — or (allegedly) committing adultery. The mere perception that a woman has behaved in a way that “dishonors” her family is sufficient to trigger an attack on her life.

According to the UN about 5,000 women and girls are killed that way yearly. Some honor killings are done in a rage of a moment. Some are a carefully planned events, where the family would gather and kill the victim. (while in Saudi we’ve heard of drowning the girls in the backyard swimming pools, stones around the neck).

The most tragic victims are the raped women or girls. In Islam the woman is blamed for being raped (as well as for lustful thinking after her, that’s the explanation for the forced, overdone modesty, i.e. veils, hijabs, burqas). The most tragic thing is that quite often the offender comes from the close family circle. It could be an uncle, a cousin, even a brother.

Some countries (Syria, Marocco, Jordan, Haiti) are excluding even the murderers from punishment in cases where the honor of the family was at stake. In other countries, mostly Muslim today, honor killing goes unpunished because of this act’s taboo treatment. Everybody knows, no one is talking.

Usually the murderer is a father, brother, husband or some other immediate family member. Reputation must be saved above all.

  1. Hi Iwka,

“An honor killing is not related only to Islam. It is more of a culture or tribal custom. There is apparently nothing in the Islamic writings that would permit these acts of violence.”

That’s very objective what you wrote…,not just because i am muslim, but honestly i never even knew such thing taught in islam.
Many things that of cultural stuffs become religion’s.

“Neverthless, it is spread wider that we even know of and those who did the gruesome procedure call upon Allah before committing the act.”

What so difficult about it…even the ‘terrorists 9/11″ saying Allah before they crashed the plane. Hmm…i am not sure they are a muslim.

The countries where certain outfit is applied, then this things could lead govt. or family to force. But in secular countries, women who wearing hijabs/veils is really a personal choice without oppression from anyone. The culture is played an important role here. Then, culture or religion, people got mixed up and confused.
